LABELS
by 6th grade students at Kid Street Charter School, 2025-2026

First is forced, pushed to take the blame
Siblings call them lame, feeling ashamed
The black sheep is invisible, hiding in your hood
The second child is up to no good
Seen as the favorite, the baby gets their way
Stealing the spotlight, causing dismay

Labels dropping us in columns
Emotions coming from both ends
Pressure is pushing down on us
Conformity, no ability to bend

Feeling sad with no one to cry to
Wanting to go home, but there is no place for me
Headless chickens with emotions running free
Being mean just to be seen
Identity confusion, just trying to be me
Everyone is telling us who we have to be

Labels dropping us in columns
Emotions coming from both ends
Pressure is pushing down on us
Conformity, no ability to bend

Once in their hands, the world disappears
Screaming, agitation, no one is actually there
Brain rot is ruining critical thinking
Children are losing brain cells,
While their family lives in fear
We are addicted, and no one can tell us no
Sometimes it feels like there is nowhere to go
Locked into our screenager world
We actually don’t know what to do
We are seen as lazy, but we are online with our crew

Labels dropping us in columns
Emotions coming from both ends
Pressure is pushing down on us
Conformity, no ability to bend

People judge us based on how we look
While their favorite races are off the hook
We are judged by our skin color left and right
Deep down, our desires are turned into plight
Our stories are all whitewashed, our histories unseen
It is hard to understand how people can be so mean
Black, White, Mexican, or Asian
This has been a problem for every generation

Labels dropping us in columns
Emotions coming from both ends
Pressure is pushing down on us
Conformity, no ability to bend

Labels are everywhere, but they don’t have to be me
Out in the open, trying to be free
